Fire Breaks Out Inside Garage Near Hampton

A skidloader caught on fire inside a garage near Hampton shortly after 7 a.m. today, and spread throughout the building along the 300 block of Lake Meade Road in Reading Township. Volunteers from several communities were dispatched on the assignment.

One Injury In Garage Fire Near York-Adams Line

A firefighter was taken to Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill after he was hurt while fighting a garage fire near the York-Adams County line Tuesday evening. The two-alarm fire broke out shortly after 9 p.m. in the one-story building along the 1300 block of Detters Mill Road in Warrington Township, which is owned by a volunteer firefighter. WGET News is told that there were several vehicles inside the garage. Liberty Fire Company of East Berlin and the Lake Meade Fire Company assisted York County volunteers on that assignment. Some fire companies remained on the scene until after midnight.

PUC Schedules '717' Hearing In Gettysburg Area

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has scheduled five hearings, one of them in the Gettysburg area, on plans that could result in changes to the 717 telephone area code. The Gettysburg area hearing will be held March 25th at 6 p.m. in the Presidential Ballroom of the Wyndham Gettysburg hotel at 95 Presidential Circle, just off Route 30 in Straban township. The PUC says the 717 area code is expected to exhaust its supply of telephone numbers by the third quarter of 2012. New area codes are needed when existing area codes exhaust their supply of numbers. Six relief alternatives are suggested for ensuring adequate number resources. The alternatives include an overlay of a new area code and various geographic splits of the existing area code.

More Than 30 Vehicles Are Damaged In Hanover

Vandals have damaged more than 30 parked vehicles throughout Hanover. Police say some vehicle windows have been broken. The calls started coming in around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday and continued throughout the day. Police are expected to update the property damage report this morning.

U.S. Supreme Court To Hear Free Speech Case

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a case launched by a York County man against members of a church group who demonstrated at the 2006 funeral of his son, who died in combat while a U.S. Marine in Iraq. The high court will consider whether members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas exercised legally protected free speech when they staged protests at military funerals. Members of the group were at St. John's Catholic Church in Westminster, MD during the funeral of Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder. His father, Albert Snyder of Spring Garden Township, sued the protestors. A Maryland jury awarded Snyder more than $11 million in damages for emotional distress and invasion of privacy. In September, 2009, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals threw out the verdict. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case this fall.

Annual Builders' Show Opens Today In Hanover

About 190 vendors are expected to set up displays at the 58th Hanover Builders' Home and Garden Show today through Saturday. The event, sponsored by the Hanover Exchange Club, will be held at the former Value City store at 1150 Carlisle St. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Hanover Area Council of Churches homeless shelter, various scholarships and athletic groups for area youngsters.  The show will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. There is a $5 admission fee. Children under 16 get in free when accompanied by an adult.

Gosselin Has Lead Foot On Trips Through Adams

For a second time since last October, Kate Gosselin has been busted for speeding along U.S. 15 in Adams County. The reality TV celebrity and mother of eight, who lives near Reading, PA, received a traffic citation on Feb. 21 near York Springs for traveling 73 mph in a 55 mph zone. She paid a $155.50 fine five days later. Gosselin, who will be one of the contestants on the upcoming "Dancing With the Stars" TV show, paid a $109.50 fine in November for traveling 15 mph over the posted speed limit on U.S. 15 in October, 2009. During that incident, she had her eight children with her.

PGCB Schedules Hearing On Table Games Plan

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will hold a hearing on Wednesday, March 24 on Hollywood Casino's request to operate table games.  The hearing will begin at 10 a.m. in the East Hanover Twp. municipal building, near Grantville. Operators of Hollywood Casino plan to offer 52 games and hire 439 people.
